How to Build a Beautiful Charcuterie Board Without Overthinking It
Share
A good charcuterie board doesn't need to take three hours, require a grocery cart full of ingredients, or look like it belongs in a magazine.
It just needs a few good things, arranged thoughtfully.
At Fennel & Fizz, we like to keep entertaining simple: start with a beautiful board, add a few things you love, and let the gathering take it from there.
Here's our favorite formula for how to make a charcuterie board that looks abundant, feels effortless, and gives everyone something to reach for.
Start With the Board
The board sets the stage.
Choose a board that's large enough to give everything a little breathing room, but not so large that you're left trying to fill every inch.
A board can be wood, marble, or another serving surface you love. At Fennel & Fizz, we naturally gravitate towards a wood board. It adds warmth to the table and can be used long after the last bite is gone.
Add Your Cheese
You don't need six different cheeses.
For a smaller gathering, two or three cheeses is plenty. Choose a mix of textures and flavors: something soft, something firm, and maybe something with a little personality.
Think creamy Brie, sharp cheddar, or a nutty aged Gouda.
Cut some of the cheese before it goes on the board and leave another piece whole. It makes the board feel more relaxed and gives guests an idea of where to start.
Add Something Savory
This is where the board starts to come together.
Add a few savory elements such as olives, salami, marinated vegetables, nuts, or a savory spread.
You don't need all of them. Pick one or two.
The trick to a functional board isn't having more. It's choosing things that work well together.
Add Something Sweet
A little sweetness keeps the board interesting.
Honey, jam, dried fruit, grapes, figs, or even a few squares of good chocolate can do the job.
One sweet element is often enough. Two if you're feeling generous.
And if you have a little honey or jam, put it in a small bowl. Suddenly, your board looks very intentional.
We love Homestead in the Hood for local honey and Yummy Lotus for local jams.
Don't Forget Something Crunchy
Crackers are the obvious choice, and for good reason.
Choose one or two varieties with different shapes or textures. Add them in a loose stack, fan, or small pile rather than spreading them perfectly around the board.
You want it to look good, but perfection is not the goal here.
A little movement makes a board feel inviting.
We are currently loving Effie's Biscuits, Rustic Bakery crisps, and Flouwer Co artisinal crackers.
Create a Little Height
This is the part that makes a simple charcuterie board look much more impressive.
Use small bowls, folded napkins, stacked crackers, or pieces of cheese to create different heights across the board.
Keep some things low and let a few pieces rise above the rest.
Fill the Gaps, Then Stop
Once everything is on the board, look for the empty spaces.
That's where your little finishing touches come in: a few nuts, dried fruit, olives, herbs, or a sprinkle of something seasonal.
This is the garnish.
And yes, we are particularly fond of it around here.
But here's the important part: stop before the board becomes crowded.
You don't need 15 ingredients to make a great charcuterie board. A handful of well-chosen things will always beat a board that feels like it needs a map.
How Much Food Do You Need?
For an appetizer board, a good starting point is about 2 to 3 ounces of food per person, depending on how many other appetizers you're serving.
If the board is meant to be the main event, plan for more.
For a small gathering, something like this is plenty:
- 2–3 cheeses
- 1–2 savory items
- 1 sweet element
- 1–2 types of crackers
- Something fresh or dried
- A little garnish
That's it.
What Should You Serve With a Charcuterie Board?
A beautiful board doesn't need much beside it.
Pour something you love. Wine is an easy choice, but sparkling water, cocktails, mocktails, or a good seasonal drink all work perfectly.
Add a stack of small plates, a few napkins, and a cheese knife or spreader.
Then invite people to help themselves.
That's the whole idea.
The Fennel & Fizz Formula
Start with the board.
Add cheese.
Add savory.
Add sweet.
Add crunch.
Create a little height.
Finish with a garnish.
Then stop fussing with it and enjoy.
The best charcuterie boards aren't the ones that took all afternoon.
They're the ones that get people gathered around the table.
And that's really what we're after at Fennel & Fizz.
A beautiful board. Something delicious to share. Something good to pour. And a reason to linger a little longer.
